The bronze replica of Nelson Mandela was sold for R36 000.

More than 300 people attended a function to raise funds for the children orphaned by HIV/Aids at the Sandton Sun Hotel last night. Five items depicting Nelson Mandela were auctioned at the function, which was organized by Parker and Paediatric HIV Foundation.

Lesly Szabo, of the Paediatric HIV Foundation, said: "We are facing a situation where unless we can take care of these children adequately and give them the type of family infrastructure that you and I both grew up with, we are going to end up with a generation of war orphans."

The first item to be auctioned was a bronze replica of Nelson Mandela. It was sold for R36 000.
