Schools have a crucial role to play in ensuring that South African youth are not at risk of contracting HIV and AIDS, premier of the North West province, Edna Molewa, has said.

Speaking at the provincial Schools AIDS Day in the capital, Mafikeng, she said the pandemic had a "particularly devastating" impact on young people.

BuaNews, the government news agency, quoted Molewa as saying, "This reality underlines the crucial role that schools should play ... the crucial responsibility is to teach young people how to avoid infection or transmitting it to others."

She warned that failure to prioritise the youth and their specific realities in the fight against HIV/AIDS was a recipe for failure.
