SABC News, Achmat calls on youth to be more 'proactive', 13 August 2004

Zackie Achmat, an Aids activist and member of the Treatment Action Campaign, has called on the youth to get involved in politics. Achmat was speaking at the inaugural Ashley Kriel Memorial Youth Lecture at the University of the Western Cape last night.

Ashley Kriel, was a member of the ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, and was shot dead by the apartheid police in 1987. Kriel was 20 years old when he died. Achmat has called on youths to work together with the government and other stakeholders in an attempt to eliminate the problems that face the youth in a free South Africa.

"I would like to urge youths to realise that the struggle has not ended and there are so many struggles such as HIV/Aids and gangsters violence... and people like Ashley should motivate them not to stop."
